First Richard Jefferson opted out of the final year of his deal for $15 million and now he is signing for 4 years and $39 million even though his play last season was sub par at best. The question first was why did Jefferson opt out? Now it becomes why did the San Antonio Spurs resign him? The answer is the Spurs must have had a deal in place with Jefferson thinking that instead of paying him $15 million they could pay him $39 million over the course of 4 years and help out their salary cap situation in the process.
$10 million a season for Jefferson might sound like a lot but you have to factor in he wasn’t going to opt out of the $15 million season unless he got something greater in return. So in essence the Spurs thought they are out of $15 million this season which becomes $17 million after looking at the luxury tax and tax distributions so they are just subtracting $17 million from $31 million for what they were going to pay Jefferson and using this as a three-year, $14 million extension which sounds alright.
But then again Jefferson really didn’t fit in this season so I don’t see the point in giving him even one extra penny than you already owe him. I think the hope is that he improves and starts jelling with the Spurs more. Did the Spurs just compound a mistake ten fold or are they really on to something?
