I still remember watching that “shimmy” shake when one of his 3 balls felt deftly into the hoop. He would have a little grin, and then you could just see it coming. From dropping 150gs in a single blackjack session, owning houses and condos that zig zagged the country, to being detained for not paying million dollar markers at casinos and even sued by his own agent, Walker has become a mere mortal. How did this happen and how can one man blow over 100 million dollars worth of earnings in just several years? The story of Antoine Walker was your typical rags to riches fairy tale, except this time, instead of that storybook ending, it became a living nightmare.
Antoine Walker entered the league at the tender young age of 19 from the University of Kentucky and was anointed a future star. He was drafted 6th overall in the 1996 draft by the storied Celtics and entered the Association with high hopes and an even better basketball pedigree. As a disciple of Rick Pitino, he was aptly prepared for life in the NBA. Walker, as expected, entered the league with a bang, averaging a team high 22.4 points and 10.2 rebounds in just his second season as a Boston Celtic. He eventually became an All -Star and was considered one of the best SF’s in the league.

He just couldn’t say no. From blowing millions on an apartment complex investment that residents found uncared-for and not maintained to blowing thousands of dollars in cash gambling with Michael Jordan, Antoine Walker simply did not know when to stop. The story with the great MJ is legendary. As a young player who began training in the offseason with Jordan, he became one of Jordan’s inner confidants and friends. As well all know with MJ, he had an affinity for gambling and thus Antoine Walker became seduced into a world that he had no control over. After their first times playing cards, they were big winners that took home hundreds of thousands of dollars, and from then, Walker was hooked. Here’s the only problem. Jordan could lose 40 million and not sweat a dime. If Antoine loses 40 million, he’s dead broke. And you know how the saying goes…….”Vegas always wins.”
Combine that with friends that suddenly came out of nowhere (as expected) asking for help here and help there, and Walker began to become a human ATM machine. He might as well have walked around town with a Wells Fargo sign on his forehead.
“I just couldn’t say no.” said Walker.
“It would be a sob story from a friend pleading with me that he needed $50,000 to fund his business idea, and then I would never hear from him again,” Walker continued.
Last year, Antoine Walker was ordered to pay back markers totaling a millions dollar to avoid jail time after being apprehended in South Lake Tahoe (and no, he wasn’t caught on the slopes snowboarding) for writing bad checks. Ten bad checks to be exact, and at some point, it had to a be sad sight to see. For a man as successful as Antoine once had been to knowingly write bad checks that he knew would never cash was as desperate as it was sad. The addictions, the friends who never paid him back, and the excess spending had finally caught up to Antoine Walker. He was ordered to pay all his debts back whether it was child support, mortgages, or casino markers, and he had to find the money fast to make those repayments. The only shimmy we may ever see from now on will be him dancing when he’s finally debt free and unfortunately, we might not see that for another 10 years.
Let’s also not forget the baby mamas that he needs to pay child support to and all the cars and properties he’s purchased, and you can see why his bills piled up faster than teams waiting in line to sign him. He recently put two houses for sale. One is a 3.1 million home in Miami and the other a swanky 4.1 million downtown Chicago condo. I’m certain Antoine would be happy selling those for even half their price. Anybody interested in paying for a former NBA star’s home?
To add insult to injury, Walker was eventually decimated to playing in Puerto Rico.Even leagues in China (where Marbury signed) and Europe gave him a resounding no. Last month, Walker signed a contract with the Guaynabo Mets who made him their highest paid player. How much is that you ask? No, it’s not 10 million, 5 milion, or even 1 million. Antoine Walker can only make a max of $150,000 in roughly 4 and a half months of basketball. This may seem like a lot for the mere mortal, but when you were once a God and had all the riches in the world, this seems like chump change to a man who owes millions.
The moral of this story? Well, I’m not sure there is one. No one can honestly say that they won’t fall into the same traps that Walker fell into when you’re suddenly presented with riches beyond your wildest dreams. Maybe that 401k you’ve been saving up for isn’t so bad after all. I mean, when you’re 65 and blow all your money, at least you can know you’ll die happy shortly after. Sorry to be so depressing, but its the truth.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface.
