Some would say Glen Coffee, Mr. Maxwell House?  Why did the 49ers take him in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft?  Let’s turn back the clock to his senior year in high school.  At Fort Walton Beach High, he rushed for 1,887 yards and 29 touchdowns in his final year.  He proceeded to go to Alabama and play there for three years.  He played sparingly his freshmen year, he redshirted his sophomore season to play for Nick Saban in 2007.  He was named the starter in 2008 which was finally Mr. Coffee’s big year.  He rushed for a total of 1,383 yards and 10 touchdowns.  One of his best statistical games was against Kentucky that year.  He rushed for 218 years on 25 rushes, who was the last 200 yard rusher at Alabama you may ask? It was former NFL MVP Shaun Alexander in 1996. 

Coffee stands at six foot one inch and weighs 195 pounds with a 4.4 40 yard dash time.  Coffee showed a few good rushes against Minnesota, and should have an open field to run against when the 49ers play the Rams this weekend.  The following week is where the 49ers play the Falcons, which should be a tougher matchup.  However, the Falcons are giving up 136 rushing yards per game, which is currently 12^th in the NFC.  The Falcons have a much better offense than the Rams with Ryan and Turner at the helm. It will be a tough two weeks for the 49ers without their star running back, Frank Gore, but hopefully the defense will continue to play well and Mr. Coffee will be able to eclipse the century mark for two weeks in a row.

The 49ers need to keep the ball in their hands to get the most use out of Coffee.  The 49ers have only had the ball for a total of 31 minutes in three games.  They have done the most with those precious minutes scoring an average of 22.3 points per game.  To put this in laymen’s terms they score a point every minute and 23 seconds.  This is a huge upgrade from the previous year.  They also need to excel on third down conversions, right now; they are at 27 percent at converting them so far.  Shaun Hill has been doing a nice job at managing the game and doing what is expected of him.  However, if he could put up a 300 yard day, it will be a nice way to keep the 49ers defense fresh. 

Editors Note:

In order to keep that defense fresh they have to at least pretend to throw the ball.  You have to mix up your passing and running game.  So start throwing the ball around.  Not just to Vernon Davis but to their wide receivers as well.  It is time to let Josh Morgan loose.  And Isaac Bruce can still play as well.  God knows they should sign Michael Crabtree.  He might not be a play maker this season after missing so much time but at least he would be a good diversion opening up the field.
