No one expected the Twins to bring the Tigers into a one game playoff to determine who gets to face the Yankees in the playoffs. They won 20 games in September and came back from a 7.5 game deficit. Who would have expected this? The Twins were hit a hard blow with the loss of their top slugger Justin Morneau for the rest of the season with about a month left of it. Michael Cuddyer stepped up his play, and somehow he belted out 31 home runs on the year so far. The Twins are familiar with this situation, as they were in the same position, playing a one game playoff last year against the White Sox. This year, the Tigers stumbled to the playoff gates, and are still looking for a pass to get in.
The starters for the game at will be Scott Baker for the Twins, facing young star, 21-year-old Rich Porcello of the Tigers. Both pitchers have shown signs of extreme dominance this year, but have been getting enough done over the last month to get their respective teams to this point. Baker pitched 34 innings, has a 3-2 record, with 29 strikeouts and a 3.97 ERA. His counterpart, Mr. Porcello has pitched 29.1 innings, posting a 2-1 record, with 9 strikeouts, and a 3.38 ERA. It is very surprising that this 21 year old kid has been able to keep it together this late into the season.
There are a few key offensive players to look for each team, which might be the difference in the game. Delmon Young of the Twins seems to have found his home run stroke after getting hit in the knee a few days ago. He hit two home runs on Sunday and has been swinging a sizzling bat since getting angry with his team for throwing behind Adam Everett. Jason Kubel has really stepped up the production since the loss of Morneau, the swift swinging DH has shown the power stroke and seems to drive in any runner that is on base. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Magglio Ordonez, has been hitting the ball great over the last month. While his OPS and HR totals might be flat lining, his batting average is at .440 with a .484 OBP. If anyone gets on base, the Tigers offense will almost surely drive them in. They are stacked from top to bottom, something the Yankees may be hoping to avoid. Miguel Cabrera has been receiving some negative press over the past few days, due to some incidents with his wife. It will be interesting to see if it bothers him on the field, or if he can continue on the impressive season he has been having. He is turning into the awesome slugger we all projected him to be.
It can really be a toss up on who will win; you never know what can happen in a one game playoff scenario. But some might give the edge to the Twins because they have been white lightning hot as of late, and the Tigers have been stumbling. Also, the Metrodome acts as a tenth man, which no one can calm down. The Tigers do have the offensive players to match any other team in the league. Who will win? You will have to watch to find out, so today at 2pm West Coast Standard Time tune your television to TBS and get ready for some action.
